Kitsap Pumas Sign Evergreen’s Willie Spurr, Tanner Williams

BREMERTON, Wash. — A pair of standout midfielders from The Evergreen State College, Willie Spurr and Tanner Williams, have signed contracts with the Kitsap Pumas for the 2016 season, the club announced today. Both will complete their studies in Olympia before joining the team full-time for training.

“The Pumas have had a lot of success over the past two seasons, so when they offered me a spot on the roster, I was very excited,” Spurr said. “I am looking forward to having the chance to play at this level and contribute to the club’s success, and I am excited to see what other opportunities will come from it.”

A four-year starter at Evergreen, Spurr helped lead his team to its best record in school history his senior season. Spurr scored 25 goals and created 11 assists in 72 career games with the Geoducks, earning himself Cascade Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year honors his freshman season, All-CCC First Team accolades all four years and an All-American Honorable Mention nomination his final season.

In addition to his play at Evergreen, Spurr also competed for the Pumas indoor team in 2013-14 alongside current head coach Cameron MacDonald.

“I’ve known Willie for a couple years, having played with him indoors,” MacDonald said. “He’ll be an important addition to our attacking lineup, and this should be a good learning experience for him.”

In two years at Evergreen, Williams contributed 14 goals and 14 assists on his way to snatching All-CCC honors his senior season.

“Signing with Kitsap is pretty surreal,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started and continue to build on all the hard work I have already put in.”

Growing up, Williams’ raw talent earned him two selections to the Olympic Development Program Region IV team, back-to-back 4A state championships with his high school team and an NSCAA High School All-American selection.

He earned a soccer scholarship to attend Concordia University in Portland, where he made an instant impact by scoring three goals and adding six assists in just one season. Upon returning home to Idaho for the summer, Williams was presented with an opportunity to travel and play soccer in Kongsberg, Norway, with current 3. Divisjon side Modum FK.

“Tanner was a player we spoke to early on in our recruiting process, and we knew right away that we wanted to have him,” MacDonald said. “He was impressive at our open tryouts.”
