Kitsap Pumas drop 3-1 match to Western Washington

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. — Despite taking the lead just 10 minutes after kickoff, the Kitsap Pumas lost their preseason friendly to Western Washington University on Saturday, 3-1. Kitsap went with an inexperienced lineup at the start, giving trialists and younger players a chance to make an impression.

“Preseason is about learning, and today was certainly a learning experience for the young squad we put on the field,” head coach Cameron MacDonald said. “We’re still in the process of putting our squad together, but we’re not happy with our performance today by any means.”

Conner Bevans scored in the 10th minute for the Pumas, running onto a bouncing ball on the right flank and unleashing a strike with the outside of his right foot that looped over Western goalkeeper Andrew Wildfong and inside the back post.

From there, Western picked up the scoring, putting away three consecutive goals before the halftime whistle. Despite wholesale changes at the break and dominating possession in the second half, the Pumas couldn’t muster an answer.

In the stands, 305 fans showed up to watch Kitsap’s first match on Bainbridge Island since 2010. The Bainbridge High School junior varsity and varsity squads played before the Pumas took the field as part of Soccer Saturday on the island.

The ball boys for the Kitsap game also came from Bainbridge Island FC’s Under-10 Development Academy.

“We’re grateful to Bainbridge for hosting us today,” MacDonald said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t put on the show for them that we wanted to, but we hope they were entertained nonetheless and found a reason to come down to Gordon Field when we kick off the regular season.”

The Pumas play next in one week’s time, taking on the Vancouver Victory at 3 p.m. at Gordon Field on April 16. It will be the team’s first ticketed match of the 2016 season against one of the Evergreen Premier League’s top sides.
