Match Preview: Kitsap faces Sacramento Republic in U.S. Open Cup Third Round action

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Kitsap Pumas take a break from PDL league play on Wednesday night to take on USL side Sacramento Republic in the Third Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match, hosted by Sacramento at Bonney Field, will begin at 8 p.m.

“I expect it to be like a typical cup game,” Pumas assistant coach Shaun Scobie said. “It should be high tempo and high intensity. Hopefully, it’ll be a fun game.”

This will be Kitsap’s second time participating in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup, the other being in 2011 when it lost by one goal, 2-1, to MLS side Seattle Sounders. As PDL Northwest Division champions, the team automatically gains entry to the tournament in the First Round. This year, the Pumas and Chattanooga FC were granted First Round byes. In 2015, the club reached the Second Round of the tournament, losing to USL side Seattle Sounders 2.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament that includes every professional club in the United States, plus a group of amateur and semiprofessional teams. This season, a total of 91 teams began the tournament.

“Anything can happen (in this tournament),” Kitsap forward Jesús Sánchez said. “Last year, the club was unlucky in the (Second) Round. We’ve already progressed a round further this year, and we want to keep the run going.”
