BREMERTON, Wash. — The Kitsap Pumas scrapped to a 2-1 victory in their penultimate game of the season on Saturday, defeating Lane United despite giving up an equalizing goal after taking the lead. The Pumas started a number of fresh faces, all of who looked up to the task, head coach Cameron MacDonald said.
“Some of the guys who hadn’t gotten many minutes this season were really impressive tonight,” MacDonald said. “Specifically thinking of guys like Willie Spurr and Emad Houache, they took their opportunity well and showed what they’re capable of.”
It was Kitsap’s Daniel Davidson, off the bench, who opened the scoring in the 71st minute with a header that found the back of the net off a Jesús Sánchez corner kick. It was only the second goal Kitsap had scored in its last six games—the last of which also came off Davidson’s head against the Seattle Sounders U23.
Lane United’s Jose Carlos Terron equalized five minutes later when his shot bounced off the post and in. Substitute goalkeeper Arturo Oberto got a hand on the shot but just couldn’t keep it out.
Oberto was another player who MacDonald singled out for praise, as he made his third appearance of the season and second off the bench. Others who impressed were midfielder Mikhail Doholis, playing against his former club, and eventual game-winner Conner Bevans.
“Arturo, Conner and Mikhail have been with us from the very beginning of the season and have worked hard every day in training,” MacDonald said. “We haven’t had the chance to play them as often as we’d like, but they received a just reward tonight for the work they’ve put in and the improvement they’ve shown since April.”
Bevans scored the winner after running onto a through ball from Connor MacMillan (another Pumas substitute), poking the ball across the goal line to capitalize on his one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper Luis Barazza.
Despite both Lane and the Pumas struggling as of late to score goals, chances were plentiful in this game. In the 48th minute, before going off, Kitsap starting goalkeeper Matt Grosey made a phenomenal double save, one coming when he was on the ground, keeping the score at 0-0.
This was the second and final time these two teams met this season after a 0-0 draw on May 13 in Eugene, Oregon, near the start of the season.
After this result, the Pumas find themselves in fourth place in the PDL Northwest Division with 14 points, with Lane United sitting right behind them in fifth, also with 14 points but with one fewer game played.
The Pumas will finish out their season with one final home game against the Calgary Foothills on July 17 at Gordon Field at 2 p.m.
