Kitsap Pumas defeat division champion Calgary Foothills, 3-1

Pumas remain unbeaten at home in three seasons

Kitsap Pumas defeat division champion Calgary Foothills, 3-1

BREMERTON, Wash. — The Kitsap Pumas scored three times in the first half-hour to defeat the Calgary Foothills, 3-1, in the regular-season finale for both teams on Sunday at Gordon Field. The Pumas finished the 2016 season in fourth place in the PDL Northwest Division, while the Foothills finished in first place, which they had clinched prior to Sunday’s encounter.

For the final day of the season, the Pumas changed their lineup around and played typical center backs Cory Keitz and Rene DeZorzi as a pair of strikers. It paid almost immediate dividends, as DeZorzi finished a header at the back post off Connor MacMillan’s cross in the ninth minute.

It was DeZorzi’s first goal for the club in his third season. Rookie forward Daniel Davidson, also playing out of position at left back, put away a chance nine minutes later, followed by captain Keitz from the penalty spot in the 29th minute to round out the Pumas’ scoring.

As a result of the win, Kitsap has not lost at home in three seasons, notwithstanding the overturned 3-0 victory over the Victoria Highlanders to start the 2016 season. The Pumas also finished with four wins, one loss and two draws against the Northwest Division’s top two 2016 finishers, Calgary and the Seattle Sounders U23.

While Kitsap won’t be going to the postseason for the first time since 2013, and failed to win the division for the first time since then as well, the Pumas have a series of highlights to look back on from the 2016 season. Those include a victory on the road against the Sacramento Republic of the USL in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as well as a well-played match against the Seattle Sounders MLS side in the subsequent round.

The Pumas also drew, 1-1, with Seattle Sounders 2 of the USL in preseason and finished the 2016 season on a six-game unbeaten run that included four matches against the playoff-bound teams.

The club now looks forward to an offseason of scouting college matches across the continent in the fall, tryouts in the winter and the start of a new season in spring 2017.
