Bremerton, Wa. – The Kitsap Pumas sealed their second consecutive and fourth all-time PDL Northwest Division crown in front of over 900 fans at Gordon Field on Wednesday evening. Logan Miller notched his fifth goal in three games to ensure a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers U23 and that point was enough to clinch the title and preserve the Pumas unbeaten season.
The opening moments were cagey, both sides seeing plenty of the ball without creating any clear chances. However a fine piece of play by defender Jake Bond on the 11 minute mark helped change that. After beating his man high down the right flank, he crossed for Logan MILLER to slam home his fifth goal in three games.
The goal seemed to spur Portland in to action and after a good spell of possession they should have found themselves level. A ball whipped in from the right hand side evaded everyone bar the onrushing Portland right back, however his shot was expertly saved by Pumas goalkeeper Matt Grosey.
Half-Time: Kitsap Pumas 1-0 Portland Timbers U-23
Portland attempted to take the game to the home side from the first whistle of the second half and found themselves level on only 49 minutes when Devon FISHER was left free at the back post and was able to slot home the equalizer. As the half wore on, the game began to open up and chances started to flow at both ends. Portland could have snuck ahead when a lapse in concentration from Keitz allowed the Timbers forward a clean look at goal but he couldn’t compose himself and his shot sailed high and wide. At the other end, Nick Hamer and Mike Ramos both spurned good openings.
Portland were reduced to ten men late in the game when defender Dennis Castillo was issued a straight red card. The Timbers defender found Miller and substitute Michael Chamberlain a handful throughout the game and he was given his marching orders after horribly mistimed challenge on Chamberlain.
With the man advantage the Pumas took control of the closing stages and should have really been out of sight. First Patino miscued his shot from eighteen yards and then Miller blazed over from eight yards with the goal at his mercy.
Full-Time: Kitsap Pumas 1-1 Portland Timbers
Despite failing to find the winning goal, one point was enough for the Pumas to remain unbeaten and win the Northwest Division championship!
