Former Kitsap Midfielder Alex Megson Joins U.S. Futsal Team

BREMERTON, Wash. — ​Alex Megson, who played for the Kitsap Pumas in their inaugural 2009 PDL season, has been named to the United States futsal national team for its series of friendlies against Argentina’s ​u​nder-20​s and senior ​team in Buenos Aires​.

Head coach Keith Tozer named a 15-player roster for the international camp​, including Megson. Megson, 29, played 14 games in the 2009 season for the Pumas, scoring two goals and adding three assists in the club’s first season. He also played in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup against the Portland Timbers.

After his season in Kitsap, Megson went on to a successful career in professional indoor soccer, where he continues to play for the Cedar Rapids Rampage​ of the Major Arena Soccer League​. He scored 16 goals ​and added ​nine​ assists ​for Cedar Rapids, one season after winning the Major Indoor Soccer League with the Missouri Comets​.​

He is the son of Neil Megson, who played for the Seattle Sounders in the NASL and established Olympic College’s now-defunct soccer program, as well as becoming director of coaching for WestSound FC. Neil Megson’s brother, Gary Megson, had a lengthy career playing and managing professionally in England.

The U.S.’s four-game series in Argentina will help it prepare for the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, May 4 to 14 in Costa Rica. The U.S. faces Canada in a set of play-in matches to start World Cup qualifying, with the first match on May 4 and the second on May 6. The winner will be placed in Group B with host Costa Rica, Curaçao and Cuba.
