Pumas welcome Portland Timbers U23 for teams’ second meeting of 2016

BREMERTON, Wash. – The Kitsap Pumas look to continue a recent hot streak as they take on the Portland Timbers U23 squad at Gordon Field on July 6 at 7 p.m. The Pumas have amassed five points in three games after two 0-0 draws with the Calgary Foothills in Canada, and then securing a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders U23, who are at the top of the table in the PDL Northwest Division.

The Pumas find themselves with a great opportunity to secure three more points with a win as the Timbers U23 are currently in last place, with nine points to their name in 11 games played. The Timbers U23 have won once in their last four games.

However, this game also proves pivotal for both teams as the Pumas are only ahead of the Timbers by one point, meaning a win by either team would shake up the table as the season comes to a close.

The Pumas and Timbers have met only once this season so far, almost a month ago on June 10 when the Pumas secured a 2-1 victory in Salem, Oregon, with goals by Hamza Haddadi and Mike Ramos. It was that same game in Salem that turned the Pumas’ fortunes, as they secured points in all but one of their next four games.

Pumas goalkeeper Matt Grosey has kept the Pumas in every game until the very end, allowing only two goals in the last four games, though it was Arturo Oberto between the sticks last time these teams met. Portland hasn’t scored more than one goal in its last five games.

If the Pumas get a win on Wednesday, they could create a logjam with three other teams on 13 points. Kitsap’s final two games of the season will also be at home, on Saturday against Lane United and July 17 against the Calgary Foothills.
